Hey there,
Electromagnet constitutes of a coil of wire wounded around a soft iron core which temporarily acts as a magnet.
The magnetic strength is directly proportional to the current flowing around the iron core.
The direction of magnetic field can be find out by Maxwell's right hand thumb rule or else, corkscrew rule.
Once the current stops flowing, the electromagnet is de-magnetized and it loses its magnetic properties. If we use a hard iron core instead of soft iron core, then it will be permanently magnetized.

A long tightly wound helical coil of metallic containing soft iron in its core is called an electromagnet.
Electromagnet is a solenoid having a soft iron core.
Electromagnet can be made by wounding copper wire on a soft iron core.
Electromagnet made by wounding insulated copper wire on a nail.
The magnetic field of electromagnet depends on :-
- The magnitude of current.
- The number of turns per unit length.
When the electric current is switched off, the electromagnet loses its magnetism instantaneously.
The second important conclusion is that an electromagnet is a temporary magnet. It behaves as a magnet only when current is flowing through it.
Uses of Electromagnets.
- For electrical devices such as electric trains.
- For moving big objects of iron from one place to another.
- For removing small iron splinter from an eye of a patient.
