Metals in salt solution undergo a process called displacement.

  • To understand this concept, let us take the example of zinc and copper.
  • The reaction between copper sulfate and zinc will result in the formation of copper and zinc sulfate.
  • In this reaction, we can notice that copper is replaced by zinc. This means that the reactivity of zinc is high than copper and therefore, zinc can replace copper.
  • This displacement can be physically noted by the change in color that is the blue color to colorless.
  • In the reverse case that is copper in zinc sulfate solution, there won't be any reaction.
  • CuSO₄  + Zn → Cu + ZnSO₄
  • Cu + ZnSO₄ → No reaction
