Edla Wilmansson is the ironmaster's daughter. The ironmaster wants to invite the peddler for Christmas but it was declined. He sends his daughter Edla to convince him and being a persuasive person she is able to convince him to go to their house for Christmas. When she looks at him compassionately. She is kind, gentle and hospitable. Despite her knowledge about the peddler's intention, she treats him with respect and feeds him well. When her father asks the peddler to go away, she feels it was unethical to send a guest away like that because he had been promised Christmas cheer.

She is able to awaken goodness in the peddler's heart by showing understanding and love. He was able to rise to the level of 'Captain' leaving his temptations aside just because he did not want to let her as well as himself down.

Edla Wilmansson

Edla Wilmansson was the ironmaster’s oldest daughter who lived with him in his mansion. She was not at all pretty, but seemed modest and quite shy. She had a very sensitive and kind heart. She was a great judge of human character. The moment she saw the rattrap seller whom her father had mistaken for an old acquaintance, she read him rightly. She knew he was either a thief or an unreliable character; however, she persuaded him to accompany her to her house to spend the Christmas Eve with them. She took his side when her father asked him to leave the house after the revelation. Her kindness and caring nature transformed the unscrupulous vagabond into a good human being. She was extremely delighted at the letter and the gift that the rattrap seller left for her. She was a great human being.
