Her uncle inherited money two years ago and promised to buy her a silver-fox stole for her birthday, but his wife died and he moved abroad, so he forgot. Eleanor is devastated by silver-fox pelts. She shows Bertram the fan counter. Eleanor tells Suzanne she and Bertram got separated. The packed store doesn't have him.
• Suzanne thanks Eleanor for her birthday gift and tells her Bertram purchased her a "wretched fan." Eleanor tells Suzanne Bertram gave her a nice gift, which disappoints her. Eleanor's fur saved their friendship.
