Molecular orbital theory explain the characteristic of molecules.

Explanation:

Molecular Orbital theory was mainly developed by Hund and Mulliken to explain their relative bond strengths, paramagnetic and diamagnetic nature etc.

The half of the difference between the number of electrons present in the bonding and the antibonding orbital is called bond order.

B.O = \frac{1}{2}(N_b - N_a).

The bond order of CO:-

The total number of the electron in CO= 14.

Please refer to the image attached for antibonding and bonding electrons.

The number of the electron in bonding orbital(N_b)= 8

The number of the electron in antibonding orbital(N_a)= 2

So, by the formula,

B.O= \frac{1}{2}(8-2)\\B.O= \frac{1}{2} 6\\B.O= 3

Properties of CO based on bond order:-

  1. It is a stable compound because the number of the electron in bonding orbital is more than antibonding orbital.
  2. As the bond order is 3, it has a triple bond.
  3. It is diamagnetic because all the electrons in the molecules are paired.

So, the bond order of the Carbon monoxide is 3.

Please refer to the image for the molecular orbital diagram of CO.
