Himalayan and Peninsular rivers.

  • Rivers are a major source of water for drinking, harvesting, and industrial consumption. Rivers mostly originate from the hills either through rains or by the melting of snow caps.
  • Himalayan rivers of India are concentrated in the northern part of the country. The major Himalayan rivers are Ganga, Yamuna, Beas, Sutlej, Ravi.
  • The peninsular rivers are concentrated on the southern part of India and some of the major rivers are Krishna, Godavari, Cauvery.
  • Dams play an important part in conserving the river waters. They serve as checkpoints and mediate the flow of river waters across the plains.
