General Takima was a cruel and selfish man. The rumor was he often beat her wife. If he could be cruel to his own wife, how must he trat his enemies? His selfishness is visible from the fact that he condoned Dr Sadao's harbouring and sheltering an American prisoner of war which was tantamount to treachery to the nation. He did it for his own selfish purpose. He knew Sadao was an accomplished doctor who could treat his ailment. So he kept him safe. He was forgetful too. He forgot to send his assassins to Sadao's house to have the prisoner of war murdered and his body disposed of.

Answer:

The General was a self-obsessed, cruel, cunning man who hated the Americans like every other Japanese. People said he was so cruel that he beat his wife rudely, leave alone what he would do with his enemy who are caught as war prisoners. He was quite insensitive in his ways and thought of none other than himself. During the war time, he didn't allow Dr. Sadao to go with the soldiers as he may need an operation for which he required highly qualified and sincere doctors like Dr. Sadao. When he got to know about the presence of the American soldier in the house of Dr. Sadao and also got to know he won't be able to resist more than one attack, he thought of his personal interest only and took no chance to risk Dr. Sadao in any way as he knew none other than Dr. Sadao can operate on him with so greater success. Keeping that in mind, he planned to have the American killed and his body removed by his personal assassins which won't raise any suspicion and by this way Dr. Sadao would remain safe.
