Teeth are located in our jaws (lower and upper) in the mouth cavity. They are fixed to the gums.
Based on the structure and function, teeth are of four types:
- incisors
- canines
- premolars
- molars
The white substance that covers your teeth is called enamel. It is the hardest substance in the body made of calcium phosphate. Small taste buds are spread all over its surface. These buds can detect all tastes like sweet, salty, sour and bitter. Normally bacteria are present in our mouth, but all are not harmful to us. However when you do not clean your teeth properly, some harmful bacteria start growing in your mouth. These bacteria break down the sugars present from the leftover food and release acids which gradually damage the teeth. This is called tooth decay. If it’s not treated in time, it causes severe toothache and even tooth loss.
