Why is electrolytic refining important?

It is important because the metals obtained after reduction are not very pure and contain some impurities.

How is it performed?

It is performed by placing the impure block of metal at the anode and a pure strip of the same metal at cathode and passing current by using an ionic salt of the same metal as the electrolyte.

What happens then?

The soluble impurities get dissolved in the electrolyte and the insoluble impurities get deposited as anode mud.

The block kept as anode becomes smaller and the one at cathode becomes larger as pure metal from anode gets deposited at cathode.
