Electrolysis is a process of separating oxygen and hydrogen from water by using an electric current

Explanation:

  • Electrolysis of water is the process of splitting Oxygen hydrogen from by passing an electric current
  • This process is also called as Water splitting
  • This process requires 1.23 volts to separate oxygen and hydrogen
  • Two electrodes ( cathode and anode) placed inside the water  were connected to DC electric power
  • Reduction process takes place in cathode where the hydrogen appear
  • Reduction is a process of gaining of electrons
  • Oxidation process takes place at anode where the oxygen appears
  • Oxidation is a process of removal of electrons or addition of oxygen atom
  • The addition of electrolytes such as salt, acid, base increases the efficiency of the electrolysis process
  • Also the usage of electrocatalyst increases the efficiency
  • This process is rarely used now because of many affordable and easiest forms of experimental methods have been used now

Importance of graphite

  • The crystalline form of carbon is called as Graphite
  • Under standard conditions graphite occurs in most stable form of carbon
  • Using high temperature and high pressure graphite can be convert into diamond
  • It is a good conductor heat and electricity and it is used as electrodes, batteries and solar panels
  • Pencil's lead is made from graphite only
  • Graphite find its applications  in brake linings, lubricants, steel making, foundry facing, brushes in motors etc.
