Electrolysis is a process of separating oxygen and hydrogen from water by using an electric current
Explanation:
- Electrolysis of water is the process of splitting Oxygen hydrogen from by passing an electric current
- This process is also called as Water splitting
- This process requires 1.23 volts to separate oxygen and hydrogen
- Two electrodes ( cathode and anode) placed inside the water were connected to DC electric power
- Reduction process takes place in cathode where the hydrogen appear
- Reduction is a process of gaining of electrons
- Oxidation process takes place at anode where the oxygen appears
- Oxidation is a process of removal of electrons or addition of oxygen atom
- The addition of electrolytes such as salt, acid, base increases the efficiency of the electrolysis process
- Also the usage of electrocatalyst increases the efficiency
- This process is rarely used now because of many affordable and easiest forms of experimental methods have been used now
Importance of graphite
- The crystalline form of carbon is called as Graphite
- Under standard conditions graphite occurs in most stable form of carbon
- Using high temperature and high pressure graphite can be convert into diamond
- It is a good conductor heat and electricity and it is used as electrodes, batteries and solar panels
- Pencil's lead is made from graphite only
- Graphite find its applications in brake linings, lubricants, steel making, foundry facing, brushes in motors etc.
