Electron-dot-structure of CaO and other given molecules

  • The following step can be used to draw an electron-dot structure for a compound:
  1. Count all the valence electrons present in the given molecule.
  2. Determine the central atom. (Atom with less number).
  3. Draw a single bond (2 electrons) between central and the surrounding atoms.
  4. Place the remaining valence electron on the atoms as lone pair.
  5. If the atom has achieved octet then no modification is required. If not, then the lone pairs of electrons must be used to adjust it by drawing double or triple bonds accordingly.
  • As per the above steps, the electron-dot structure of molecules such as the following are given in the attachment
  1. CaO
  2. Na_2O
  3. MgCl_2
  4. H_2O
  5. NH_3
