The below image shows the electron dot structure of the first three members of organic carbon compounds, alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes.

Electron Dot Structure

  • It is also called Lewis structure. It is a way to represent the distribution of the valence electrons in the atom or molecule. In the following representation, the electrons are marked as dots, and it is the simplest way to diagrammatically describe the chemical bonding between atoms.

Alkanes, Alkenes, and Alkynes

  • Alkanes are the saturated C-C single-bonded carbon compounds with the general formula of C_{n} H_{2n+2}. The first three members of alkanes are methane (CH_{4}), ethane (C_{2} H_{6}), and propane (C_{3} H_{8}).
  • Alkenes are the unsaturated C-C double-bonded carbon compounds with the general formula of C_{n} H_{2n}. The first three members of alkanes are ethene (C_{2}H_{4}), propene (C_{3} H_{6}), and butene (C_{4} H_{8}).
  • Alkynes are the unsaturated C-C triple-bonded carbon compounds with the general formula of C_{n} H_{2n-2}. The first three members of alkynes are ethyne (C_{2}H_{2}), propyne (C_{3} H_{4}), and butyne (C_{4} H_{6}).
  • Methene and methyne do not exist because of the incapability of the single carbon atom to form bonds with hydrogen atoms and complete their octet of 8 electrons.

The Lewis structure is drawn for the first three members of alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. However, the structures of methene and methyne can not be drawn because of their incompatibility to complete their octet of 8 electrons.
