Draw the graph of potential energy (v) of a pair of nucleons with separation distance(r) between them. Use this graph to explain why the force between the nucleons must be regarded as (i) strongly repulsive for separation values less than ro (ii) attractive nuclear force (r>ro)?

Conclusions:

(i) The potential energy is minimum at a distance r0 of about 0.8fm.

(ii) Nuclear force is attractive for distance larger than r0.

(iii) Nuclear force is repulsive if two are separated by distance less than r0.

(iv) Nuclear force decreases very rapidly at r0/equilibirium position.
