Draw the graphs of the following linear equations on the same graph paper.
2x+3y = 12, x – y = 1
Find the coordinates of the vertices of the triangle formed by the two straight lines and the y-axis. Also, find the area of the triangle.

• Area of triangle is 15/2 sq. units.

• Coordinates of triangle are A(3,2)

B(0,4) C(0,-1).

2x+3y=12

for x=0 y=4

for y=0 x=6

=>2x+3y=12 passes through (0,4)

and(6,0)

similarly x-y=1

for x=0 y=-1

for y=0 x=1

=>x-y=1 passes through (0,-1) and(1,0)

Now , coordinates of required triangle are A(3,2) B(0,4) C(0,-1).

Now , area of triangle =

1/2[X1(Y2-Y3)+X2(Y3-Y1)+X3(Y1-Y2)]

=1/2[3(4-(-1))+0(-1-2)+0(2-4)]

=1/2[3(4+1)]

=15/2 Sq. units
