● Gross structure of kidney -

• Kidney is covered by tough, fibrous capsule called renal capsule.
• Gross structure of kidney can be divided into outer cortex & inner medulla.
• Renal pyramids are triangular divisions of medulla.
• Cortical tissue that dips down between medullary pyramids is called columns of Bertini.
• Renal papilla is narrow innermost end of pyramid.
• These papilla drain into minor calyses to major calyses and finally to renal pelvis.
