  • Lewis structures are diagrammatic representations of an atom or molecule that depicts the electron distribution around it.
  • Only valence shell electrons are shown in these structures.
  • Nitrogen has the electronic configuration 1s² 2s² 2p³. Thus it has only 5 electrons in its outermost shell i.e. the valence shell.
  • These electrons form 3 covalent bonds each in nitrogen (N₂) and ammonia (NH₃) molecules.
  • Hydrogen in the ammonia molecule has only 1 electron. So each hydrogen can only form one covalent bond with the central atom, Nitrogen.
