Draw the ray diagram in each case to show the position and nature of the image formed when the object is placed. (a) at the centre of curvature of a concave mirror (b) between the pole P and focus F of a concave mirror (c) in front of a convex lens (d) at 2F of a convex lens (e) in front of a concave lens

To draw:

Image formed when the object is placed

(a) at the centre of curvature of a concave mirror

(b) between the pole P and focus F of a concave mirror

(c) in front of a convex lens

(d) at 2F of a convex lens

(e) in front of a concave lens.

Principles to be used:

  • Paraxial rays from the object after reflection/refraction passes through the Principle Focus of the mirror or lens.

  • For any mirror , rays through the centre of curvature will trace back its path after getting reflected.

  • For any lens , rays passing through the optical centre shall remain undeviated.

Characteristic of images :

a) Image is formed at centre of curvature . Image is of same size , inverted and real.

b) Image is virtual and formed behind the mirror. Image is enlarged and erect.

c) Irrespective of the position of object , the image will be real and inverted. Depending upon the position , magnification varies.

d) Image will be formed at the centre of curvature of lens ; image will be real , inverted and same size as that of object.

e) Irrespective of the position of object , image will always be virtual, erect and diminished.

(Refer to all the diagrams)
