Answer: Three fundamental carbon based molecules are :

straight chain, branched chain and rings.

  • Straight chain - these can be alkane, alkene and alkyne with no unsaturation, double bonds or triple bonds respectively.
  1. Alkane : example, CH₃-CH₃(ethane)
  2. Alkene : CH₂=CH₂ (ethene)
  3. Alkyne : CH≡CH (ethyne)
  • Branched chain - a carbon chain with side chain is present. Example, CH₃-CH(C₂H₅)-CH₂-CH₃ ⇒2-ethyl butane
  • Rings - these can further be cyclic, aromatic, non aromatic or anti aromatic rings. Example,
  1. Cyclic : cyclopropane(C₃H₆) ,cyclobutane (C₄H₈)
  2. Aromatic : benzene (C₆H₆)
  3. Non-aromatic : 1,3-cyclopentdiene
  4. Antiaromatic: 1,3-cyclobutdiene
