Graphite has a giant covalent structure in which: each carbon atom is joined to three other carbon atoms by covalent bonds. the carbon atoms form layers with a hexagonal arrangement of atoms. the layers have weak forces between them.

(1) Graphite has a two dimensional sheet like structure with layers of planar hexagonal ringsnof carbon atoms.

(2) Each carbon atom in hexagonal ring undergoes sp2-hybridisation and forms three sigma bonds with three carbon atoms.

(3) The fourth electron forms a n bond.

(4) The various layers are held by weak van der Waals forces and the distance between them is 335 pm

(5) Graphite cleaves easily between the layers hence it is very soft and slippery. Therefore, it is a very good dry lubricant.

(6) The electrons in graphite are delocalised over whole sheet. Due to presence of mobile electrons graphite is a good conductor of electricity
