  • The electronic configuration of O is 1s2 2s2 2px2 spy1 spz1.
  • if the py orbital of one oxygen atom overlaps the py orbital of the other oxygen atom along with the internuclear axis a sigma py-py bond is formed.
  • If the py orbital of one of the oxygen atoms overlaps laterally with the py of other oxygen atoms along the internuclear axis a bond will be formed.
  • Pz orbital of oxygen atom will overlap laterally perpendicular to the internuclear axis giving a π pz – pz bond.
  • Thus oxygen will have a double bond between the oxygen atoms

For nitrogen molecule -

  • The electronic configuration of N is 1s 2 2s 2 2p 3 .

  • If the py orbital of one of the nitrogen atoms overlaps laterally with the py of other nitrogen atoms along the internuclear axis a bond will be formed.

  • There are six electrons shared between the two nitrogen atoms forming a triple bond
