The symbols for the following: (a) a bulb, (b) an electric cell, (c) a switch (d) a battery of electric cells is attached below.
Explanation:
Three conditions need to be fulfilled for electric current to flow:
- A source of electric current (cell and battery).
- Unbroken path for the flow of charge.
- A metal wire for conducting an electric current.
Components of the electric circuit:
Electric bulb :
- An electric bulb consists of a thin wire called a filament, which glows and produces heat when an electric current passes through heat.
Cell :
- A cell is a source of electric current. It has 2 terminals positive terminal and a negative terminal.
- The positive end (+) of the cell is connected to the negative end (-) of the second cell, and so on.
On-off switch:
- An electric circuit has a switch. A switch is a simple device that helps us to close or open the circuit.
- The electric circuit is complete when the switch is in the ‘ON’ position, and the current can flow through the circuit.
- When the switch is in the ‘OFF’ position, the circuit is incomplete, no current flows and the appliance does not work.
Battery :
- The combination of 2 or more cells is known as a battery.
- A battery can be made by connecting cells in two ways: series or parallel.
