Construction of two parallel lines 4cm apart, using a ruler and compass is drawn in the attachment below.

Steps of construction :

(i) Draw a line AB of any length using the ruler and take point P on it.

(ii) At point P, draw PQ perpendicular to AB. i.e angle of 90°.

(iii) With P as a centre and a radius of 4 cm, draw an arc to intersect P at X such that PX = 4 cm.

(iv) At point X, draw XE perpendicular to PQ. i.e angle of 90°.

(v) Extend XE on both sides to form a line CD.

Hence, CD is the required line parallel to line AB at a distance of 4 cm from it.

Some information about parallel lines:

  • Two lines are said to be parallel to each other if they lie in the same plane and they do not intersect however far they are extended.
  • The distance between two parallel lines is the same everywhere.
