Yeasts divide asexually by two means

  1. Budding
  2. Fission

Explanation:

1. Budding

  • This is the most common method.
  • A small part of cell wall begins to soften and budding starts as a protrusion there, which starts growing bigger into a bud forming a constriction at the base.  The bud formed can be more than one also.
  • The parent nucleus undergoes division and the daughter nucleus starts shifting into the new bud. The bud which is smaller in size detaches from the parent cell at the constricted area.
  • This process continues to form a chain of smaller buds.
  • Quite often. budding continues without detachment from the parent cell causing a formation of branched or unbranched chain of cells which eventually get separated from the parent cell.

2. Fission

  • It is the division of the parent cell into two.
  • During this process, the parent cell elongates and the nucleus divides itself into two daughter nuclei.
  • A transverse partition wall is formed medially from periphery to the centre dividing the parent cell into two daughter cells.
  • The two daughter cells may remain together for some time and divide again. Sometimes, they may get separated soon and then divide further.
