When an object is thrown vertically upwards the velocity of the object starts to deaccelerate gradually due to the gravitational force acting upon the object which tends to pull down the object towards the earth.
Now a point comes when the velocity of object becomes 0, at this point the object comes to rest for a fraction of time and gradually starts to increase its acceleration as it falls towards the earth under the action of gravity.
