The tall man
“Drink it, quick!” I looked at the bottle. The contents were unlike any I’d ever seen. I closed my eyes and drank it in one gulp. The tall man who had at first asked me to drink it looked at me with satisfaction he said, "it's a relief that you have now drunk it!". I could not understand what the man was meaning but I had made myself believe that whatever the man was doing, it was for my best. But suddenly my head began to reel. I couldn't make out what was happening to me; everything became blurry and the noises became fumbled. I could neither see nor hear anything.
I woke up to the noise of the ceiling fan, saw that I was kept in a room with asbestos roof. I didn't know how many days had passed after I had lost my consciousness. While coming out of the room the wooden floor creeked and made noises. I saw the same tall man coming to me saying, "oh, you have woken up. So nice to see you!". I was not surprised to see the man because he had only insisted me to drink that gross looking syrup in the bottle. The only thought I had in my mind was to escape from that place.
I made a plan that I would be acting friendly with the tall man and try to have a conversation with him and in that way I would be able to know the location of that place. But like always I was stumbling with words. The man wore a big bright smile on his face and again started talking, " you will not be able to remember what had happened to you so let me make it clear to you". "Oh yes please do so" I replied. " You are waking up after 72 hours. I am an ex officer in the army and you were being chased by terrorists", the man continued, " you did not realise it but I at once recognised them. It was for them that I had lost my job. And so I reluctantly had to give you the medicine so as to take you to a safe place." I did not believe a single word of the man because he looked suspicious. I know I do not have a good talent of intuition but I do believe myself and sometimes I do make myself believe certain unbelievable things. Nevertheless I asked him to help me return to my home.
The man took me to an underground stairway. It was pitch dark and the only source of light was a kerosene lamp which the man held in his hand. I followed the man without any protest. And to my astonishment, it was a metro track down there. He told me to walk a few yards northwards and the metro station would be visible. I told the man that I did not have money to buy tickets for the metro. He told me to check my left breast pocket, and surprisingly a crispy 200 bucks note felt in my palm.
I left the man without any goodbye wishes. The man giving me a bottle of gross liquid to drink, me waking up in a shabby cottage, the underground metro area, and the 200 bucks made no sense. It all felt unusual and it made no sense. When I reached the station and I saw that the place was a few kilometres away from my home. I bought a ticket and boarded the train. When I reached home, I saw everything normal and everything just in place. I lived in an apartment. No one seemed to know that I was missing for about 3 days. The past few moments felt like a dream to me.
