During the complete motion of the objects in the examples above, the axis of rotation:
passes through the center of mass of the object (cm),
it is perpendicular to the xy-plane,
it translates following the path of the center of mass, and
it does not change direction.
For a rigid body that is free to rotate and translate, the motion of the object can be thought of as a combination of translation of the center of mass and rotation about the center of mass. For a truly rigid body that cannot deform at all, the combination of translation of the center of mass plus spin about the center of mass are sufficient to reproduce any possible real motion.
