Put it simply: Everything has lot of Energy. The mass if not the kicker. Instead look at c, the speed of light. It is such a large number (approx. 3 x 10^8 m/s) that the energy is always going to be large. So something as small as kernel of rice has enough energy to power a city up for months. Why can't we do that you ask? Due to the fact that you can't harness a lot of energy from it. We simply don't have the technology in today's day and age. 

Now, the second property to examine is the meaning between energy and matter: they are different forms of the same thing. Meaning, if you have energy, you can turn it into matter and vice versa. So the next time you look up at the sun or see a glowing star or even have the remembrance of the atomic bomb (1946), understand that we need the equation in understanding what is going on. Its such a powerful tool that it helps us understand the big bang and what has, is, and will continue to happen in the universe as expand.

Energy and matter are one and the same thing ;  when energy slows down it gets heavy and that what makes matter;  so when anything losses energy it loses mass because they are one and the same  

okay to a child : 

everything is energy; matter is energy moving very slowly; so when you get energy from something you lose some matter   

the problem is the child needs to know what energy is and what mass is and how energy comes about;  

the simplest thing to say is that everything is energy even objects

e=mc2 is not the theory of general relativity it is the matter - energy equivalency 


and it does apply in practice : atomic bomb
