Drona is supporting gauravas and against pandavas but will out his willing.Drupada ,Arjuna and Karna had bramastra in gurukshektra.

Drona know that arjuna and karna won't use bramastra because they don't need to see destroying all people.

But after the force of duriyodana ,karna tried to use bramastra. drona know drupatha will use bramastra in some cases .

So , he got promise when barath war started.
