This is a question that should be addressed in school. The disadvantages are well known, and taught to young kids in such a way that it makes you feel that they’re lying somehow. Why would so many people do these drugs if all they do is ruin your life? This is my problem with movies like Requiem For A Dream, which seem almost like propaganda because they heavy-handedly demonize drugs with no depiction of the benefits. So here are some of the benefits, to balance the story.

Drugs offer glimpses into different modes of consciousness. This is extremely valuable for personal growth and could be useful for science as well. Some examples: alcohol activates a sort of emotional-social awareness. Cannabis activates some types of body-sensory awareness. Amphetamines open up a type of hyper-rational focus. Mushrooms can enable spiritual and even psychic awareness. Timothy Leary did a lot of work categorizing modes of consciousness and the ways drugs can activate consciousness. Look up his 8-circuit model.

Drugs can open up parts of the personality and psyche that are not easily accessed. Some people discover aspects of their sexuality using hallucinogens. Many people discover new avenues of taste and aesthetics through Cannabis use.

Drugs can be great tools for introspection and therapy. Specifically psychedelics and empathogens. These drugs allow emotional expression and recall that can heal trauma.

Drugs can spark creativity. Much great music, comedy, and art has its origins in drug use.

Now, ultimately all of these benefits can be attained without drug use, and it is best to use the drugs to see what is possible, and then to strive to attain these things sober. But occasional drug use can serve as a great tool to keep in tune with yourself.

Much has been said about the pitfalls of drug use, and it is worth knowing:

Drugs can harm the body. Overuse and misuse can cause damage to organs and systems. The liver and kidneys, when overworked, can fail. It is important to eat well and exercise if you’re going to use.

Drugs can harm the brain. Stimulants can damage neurons. Too much MDMA can cause Serotonin Syndrome. Too much LSD can cause disorders in perception and cognition.

Drugs can hurt your social standing and relationships. The stigma of using will put many people off, and if you are going deep, you will probably allow your relationships to decay in favor of your indolence.

Drugs can lead to unrealistic expectations. In the realm of the mind, anything is possible. Transmuting these desires into the material world can lead to delusion and disappointment. This can contribute to the main pitfall of drug use which is:

Addiction. Some drugs are physiologically addicting and all of them can be psychologically addicting. When the visions and sensations offered by the drug are more desirable than reality, the temptation is to take more. The problem is, returns diminish, and side-effects magnify. This can end quite tragically if you can’t get a grip on the situation. Often times, nature has a way of telling you to slow down. But not everyone listens.

With all of that said, it’s an individual discussion whether to use. Individuals respond quite differently to the same doses. Some people swear by mushrooms. Others always seem to have a bad trip. Even something as simple as a cup of coffee can affect people in a myriad of ways. And speaking of which, coffee and sugar are drugs as much as cannabis is. When you say “drugs”, you’re talking about heroin and cocaine and salvia and pot and mushrooms all in the same breath. Generally speaking, moderate hallucinogen use is less harmful than using stimulants or opiates. Or Xanax, for that matter. Prescription drugs are often more deadly than plants. Do your research. Erowid is a great resource.
