They are also known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MOAIs). Monoamine oxidase breaks down norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft of the neurons in the brain.  

Patients with ‘depression’ and ‘anxiety’ have been diagnosed with low levels of these neurotransmitters. MOAIs block the action of ‘monoamine oxidase’ and increase the ‘availability’ of the neurotransmitters which alleviate the symptoms of depression.
