During British colonial rule, the permanent settlement consolidated the zamindari system in undivided India. The British also rewarded supportive zamindars with the status of princes and awarded them titles. The zamindars were used for the collection of taxes by the British, a part of which was given to them by the colonialists. Because of this cosy and mutually beneficial relationship, the zamindars often sided with the British.
