➡Dry Ammonia gas has no action on litmus paper but a solution of ammonia in water turns red litmus blue . This is because , in the absence of water it cannot split apart or dissociate into ions . ➡Hence it forms ammonium Hydroxide ( NH4OH) this is basic in nature . Hence it turns blue litmus red .
