Dry ammonia has no action on litmus paper but the solution of ammonia in water turns red litmus paper

blue. Why is it so? ​

Dry Ammonia gas has no action on litmus paper but a solution of ammonia in water turns red litmus blue . This is because , in the absence of water it cannot split apart or dissociate into ions . ➡Hence it forms ammonium Hydroxide ( NH4OH) this is basic in nature . Hence it turns blue litmus red .

Dry ammonium has no action on litmus paper because in dry condition ammonia has no moisture but solution of ammonia in water has moisture so it turns red litmus paper blue
