The ducks cannot feel when water is cold because they do not have insulating layer of fat or feathers.
Therefore, they have to be able to minimize the amount of heat they loose through their feet by blood circulation.
Thus, by the time blood reaches the foot, it is very cool and does not lose too much heat transfer with cold water
