In the battle of Mahabharata, the main battle was fought becuase of high aspirations and excess pride which were personified as Shakuni.

We can say that Shakuni was responsible for denaturing the brotherhood relations of the Kurus and the Pandavs.

But actually it is quite appropriate to that qualities like high aspirations to become kings, arrogance, avarice, fury, intolerance, rigidity, insensitivity, etc. between the Kurus and Pandavs were responsible for the battle of Mahabharata .
