Mahayala means the day when Maa durga finished the biggest evil of the world whose name was Mahesasur....Maa durga was the incarnation of goddess parvati which was formed by different great gods like Brahma ...Vishnu...Shiva...Indra...vayu...agni...etc....they gave her ashtra and then Maa durga on her lion went to maheshasur to kill him....maheshasur was provided a boon that he won't die until anytime by a man...but this work did a woman....and at last she killed him...

therefore this day is celebrated by Bengali's specially in west bengal as the greatest Puja...and continues up to 10 days as durga Puja after mahalaya.....:).....
