Answer:

We know that, Speed = Distance / Time

So, time taken to travel first 150 km, t1 = Distance / Speed = 150 / 30 = 5 h

Time taken to travel next 60 km, t2 = Distance / Speed = 60 / 40 = 1.5 h

Total distance travelled = 210 km

Total time taken = t1 + t2 = 5 + 1.5 = 6.5 h

So, average speed = Total distance / Total time = 210 / 6.5 = 32.308 km/h

you have to calculate the time for the 150 km and the 60 km separately, then divide total distance by total time.

calculation:

150÷30=5 hours

60÷40=1.5 hours

average speed=(150+60)÷(5+1.5)=32.3 km/h

Distance = 150 km , Speed = 30 km, Therefore Time = 5 hours

Distance = 60 km, Speed = 40km/h, Therefore Time = 1.5 hours

Combined Journey Analysis

Combined Distance = 210 km, Combined Travel = 6.5 hours, Therefore Average Speed = 33.30 km/h

Is this a homework question? Break the question into parts. How long did it take the bus to travel the fist part of its journey at 30 kmh? How long for the second part? How long did it take to travel the entire distance? How long was the entire distance? You can take it from there.

150 km at 30km/h — 5h

60 km at 40km/h — 1,5h

So, you travelled 210km in 6,5h.

~32,3km/h

Or you can calculate the ponderared harmonic mean (Harmonic mean - Wikipedia) of these two values:

210/(150/30+60/40) = ~32,3
