Solution:

on an average one ship out of 9 sunk

=> p = 1/9

q = 1 - p   = 1 - 1/9  = 8/9

n = 6

probability that exactly 5 out of a convoy of 6 ships would arrive safely

=> Exactly one ship sunk

P(x) = ⁿCₓpˣqⁿ⁻ˣ

=> P(1) = ⁶C₁(1/9)¹(8/9)⁵

=> P(1) = 6 (1/9) 8⁵/9⁵

=> P(1) = 6 x 8⁵ /9⁶

=> P(1) =  0.36995

=> P(1) =  0.37

0.37  is the probability  that exactly 5 out of a convoy of 6 ships would arrive safely
