Towns emerged around temples such as those of Bhillasvamin (Bhilsa or Vidisha inMadhya Pradesh), and Somnath in Gujarat. Other important temple towns included Kanchipuram and Madurai in Tamil Nadu, and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Pilgrimage centres also slowly developed into townships.
