During British rule it was easier for the European companies rather than Indian companies to set up industries for the following reasons:

  • Britishers were basically Europeans so it was evident that they would push for their economic development of their companies.                    
  • The British forced Indians to export raw materials at very low prices to Britain like food grains , plantation products etc which was not available in abundance in their country. Also there were certain products which were sent across to Britain which were in great demand.
  • Indian industrial products were heavily taxed compared to the European counterparts which resulted in costly Indian products compared to the Europeans ones.
  • During the British rule Indians were forced to use readymade  goods  produced by the British which attracted nominal duty or even duty-free, on the contrary Indian goods were levied with high import duties in England.
  • The East Indian Company helped the European Industrialists in  exploiting resources which was not the case with the Indian Industrialists as they hardly got any assistance from the company.
