Because the heat energy supplied is used up in changing the state of matter and also this heat is used for braking of several bonds or attractive forces. This heat , which does not raise the temperature of the body , it is called Laten heat.....i hope it helps you

During change of state temperature does not raise because it is used to overcome the intermolecular force of attraction between particles , this is also called latent heat .
