If one disease can provide wisdom beyond our comprehension of how fragile, interconnected and precious life is, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic offers a plethora of lessons on a personal, regional and planetary level.
Crises like COVID-19 show the urgency to promote necessary transformations for our society to survive in the 21st century. It can be a good reminder that in any breakdown, there is always a chance for breakthrough.
We turned to three of our 2019 Young Champions to gain some of their personal reflections as they navigate all the highs and lows 2020 has brought their way.
COVID - 19 - Pandemic:
Resources needed to combat the pandemic situation:
- Get immunised, stay at home, cover your mouth and nose when you go out in public, keep a safe distance from other people, ventilate indoor spaces, monitor potential exposure durations, wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, practise good respiratory hygiene, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
Hand wash:
- When you sneeze or cough, you must wash your hands thoroughly.
- The WHO also suggests that individuals wash their hands frequently, especially after using the restroom or when their hands are noticeably unclean, before eating, and after blowing their nose, for at least 20 seconds.
- When soap and water are not readily available, the CDC recommends using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
Face mask:
- In public spaces when there is a higher risk of transmission and when it is difficult to maintain social distance practises, the WHO and the US CDC suggest using non-medical face coverings.
- This guidance is designed to reduce the spread of the illness by asymptomatic and presymptomatic patients and to supplement tried-and-true preventive methods like social seclusion.
- The quantity and spread of exhalatory droplets emitted while breathing, speaking, and coughing are decreased by face coverings.
- A face mask without vents or holes will additionally filter out virus-carrying particles from breathed in and exhaled air, reducing the chance of infection.
