The reasons for excessively cold weather in North India during December and January are:

1. States like Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan experience continental climate as they are far away from the moderating influence of the sea.

2. A cold wave situation is created due to snowfall in the nearby Himalayan ranges.

3. The cold winds coming from the Caspian Sea and Turkmenistan bring cold wave along with frost over the North Western part of India.

North India faces very cold climates during the months of December and January. Punjab and Rajasthan sometimes have freezing temperatures. The northern plain of India runs closer to the Tropic of Cancer which is in the Northern Hemisphere. So, the months of December, January and February are very cold.

The primary reasons for this cold climate of the Northern plain are -

1. Most of the Northern states of India are far from the sea coast. Therefore, they do not have much of the continental weather.

2. Since the Northern plain is close to the Himalayan range, a cold wave usually creates a cold climate.

3. During the month of February, the cold winds arise from the Caspian Sea and from Turkmenistan and they bring fog and frost along with the cold wave over the North and Northwestern regions of India.

4. The high altitude regions have snowfall during winters which makes the surrounding places also cold.
