The most widely used method for refining impure metal is electrolytic refining.

Impure metal is made anode, and thin strip of pure metal is made the cathode. A solution of metal salt is used as an electrolyte.

On passing current pure metals from anode dissolves into electrolyte.

Pure metal is third deposited on the cathode soluble impurities go into solution whereas insoluble impurities settle down at bottom of anode and is known as anode mud.
