Nitrogen and phosphate compounds increase the growth of phytoplanktons in an aquatic ecosystem. There is a boom in the growth of phytoplanktons which is sometimes referred to as algal bloom.

In algal bloom, phytoplanktons may cover the whole surface of the pond. In this way, it blocks sunlight for other plants and aquatic animals living below the surface. Plants cannot perform photosynthesis, and therefore fish which feed on the plants die and gradually the whole ecosystem would be destroyed.
