Hundreds of birds injured during kite-flying festival

The year has started on a desolate note for conservationists and animal activists with over 500 birds being severely injured across several states in the kite flying festival of Makara Sankranti  or Uttarayan on January 14 and 15.

The celebrations turned out to be deadly for birds . In the two days of Makara Sankranti festivities, the forest department rescued and treated 4127 birds, of which 186 died during treatment. Some cities reported 2035 bird injuries of which 439 birds died. Several NGOs were also involved in in bird rescues across different states.

The injuries are caused by the string called ‘manja’ used to fly kites. Gummed and coated with powdered glass, the strings are made dangerously sharp so as to slash the thread of any opponent’s kite mid-air during kite fights.

Birds such as rose-ringed parakeets,  pariah kites, pigeons and barn owls are commonly injured as they  fly into these strings or are entangled in them, causing deep cuts to their wings,  fractures, nerve injuries, dislocations and, in most cases, death.

Activists have requested a country-wide blanket ban on Manja that is needed immediately, so as to as save our bird species.
