President Obama sent 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan in his first term to increase security presence in the country. Prior to his sending, there were already 36,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan.

President Obama was concerned about the resurgence of Taliban and he felt that the increase in troops would somehow help his troops to control the situation.
