When a sudden partial vacuum is created during the propagation of a sound wave it is called rarefaction. Actually rarefaction refers to the decrease in the density of something. In physics the longitudinal wave motion of sound consists of a succession of rarefactions and compressions. The rarefactions are regions of low air pressure and the compressions are areas of high pressure.
