the reasonbehind this is anomalous behaviour of water....
when the temprature of water is between 0 to 4 degree it expands and contracts at 4 deggree wheras other liquid dont do so...this exceptional behaviour of water is called anomalous behavior of water....during winter the upper part of water surface become 4 degree and hencer the surfaces freezes.....but the temp under the surface remain same due o which it does not change and hece in this way aquaticlife survives in winter season even if they r in frozenlake..
