Hi,
Mainly the leaf is boiled in ethanol to discolour it... the solution turns bright green in colour while the leaf becomes pale. It is then possible to trace the areas having starch that turns blue- black on applying iodine.
So there is nothing like retaining the starch . Starch remains already stored in a leaf.
